Welcome to the New Absorb LMS Customers We Can’t Name (and Those Below That We Can!)

November 8, 2012 Leave a comment

As is typical, a number of our new clients have asked that we not announce them publicly on this Blog and on our Web site’s client list. These customers include:

  • Departments in large organizations that already have an `official’ learning management system (LMS) that doesn’t do what the department needs. These departments need to keep their use of Absorb LMS below the radar.
  • Commercial training providers that wish to keep their use of Absorb LMS a secret and competitive advantage.
  • One major well-known global retailer—who’s name you would recognize, and it’s totally killing us not to name who it is—that has a policy of not allowing suppliers to name them as a client until they have worked together for one full year. Fair enough.

We welcome these unnamed clients.

The following organizations, which span a multitude of industries, HAVE, however, given us the green light to let the world know they’ve become Absorb LMS customers. We’re thrilled to welcome them.

How One Organization Abandoned a Free Open Source Learning Management System and Saved a Pile of Cash

October 30, 2012 1 comment

Shredding money (Some rights reserved by Tax Credits on Flickr)COLA is a physician-directed organization whose purpose is to promote excellence in laboratory medicine and patient care through a program of voluntary education, consultation, and certification. With approximately 7500 global customers, COLA is the world’s largest laboratory accreditation organization.

About seven years ago, COLA decided that deploying a learning management system (LMS) would provide the company with much needed flexibility with the delivery of their online learning programs, while simultaneously offering them increased efficiencies and cost savings.

COLA decided that it could best achieve its goals by implementing a popular open-source LMS solution with the help of third-party consultants and developers. The belief was that a free LMS solution could be configured to meet all of their business requirements at a much lower cost than a commercial-off-the-shelf system, even when factoring in the consulting costs associated with having the system built to their specifications.

Things didn`t work out as expected. The longer the free open source LMS was in place, the more money, time, and people were required to try and make the system run properly. At one point, COLA was spending an additional $500-$1,000 per week on LMS maintenance, and, that figure did not even include expenses related to internal staff time.

The good news is that COLA’s management didn’t sit idly watching the bleeding. They abandoned the open source LMS, selected a system that better matched their requirements, and even won an industry Award for their learning initiative.

Read what went wrong in their open source LMS implementation and how COLA turned a bad situation into an award-winning success story.

Absorb LMS Customer, COLA, Wins a Brandon Hall Excellence Award

October 3, 2012 1 comment

We’re pleased to announce that Absorb LMS customer, COLA, has won a Silver Excellence In Learning Award from Brandon Hall Group in the category of Best in Learning Technology Implementations for their submission “COLA’S New E-Learning Experience.”

The winning entry describes COLA’s move to Absorb LMS from an open source learning management system and reports the following benefits and return on investment:

COLA is spending less on the Absorb platform than it did on the old proprietary system. Further, because it is an internally hosted solution, there is no external hardware dependency. Indeed, updates to the materials available by the solution can be made by multiple COLA staffers. COLA no longer needs to hire a vendor to print certificates, and COLA customer service staffers have experienced a 50 percent drop in customer complaints since the new tool went online.

Factoring in all savings to date, COLA estimates its reduction in costs to be $60,000 since the new system went online.

In addition to spending less, COLA is selling more. COLA experienced a measurable spike in sales of its educational products and services.

About COLA:

COLA is a physician-directed organization whose purpose is to promote excellence in laboratory medicine and patient care through a program of voluntary education, consultation, and accreditation. The U.S.’s largest private accreditor of medical laboratories, COLA helps clinical labs comply with federal lab quality requirements established under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act Amendments of 1988. Additionally, COLA also helps labs comply with licensure requirements in various states. Using an LMS for Highly Effective Retail Training: Part One

January 4, 2012 Leave a comment

LISTEN AND LEARN (is what we do)

One of the things I love best about this job is that I have the great pleasure of speaking with a variety of  senior training managers across many industries on a weekly basis. I like to think that they learn as much from me as I do from them but sometimes, I am sure that I am the one that really benefits from these conversations.

It’s important for us as a learning technology provider to participate in these discussions and to really listen to the challenges faced by our customers “in the trenches”. I know we are good listeners because our products reflect a lot of the great thinking generated by these interactions. In particular, we have collaborated with some brilliant clients (like Oakley) to develop an understanding of some great best practices in the area of retail training.

Recently, I had a long conversation with a training manager of a department store chain that has about 100 stores and no Learning Management System. I want to share some observations here that came up in that discussion, specifically in the context of retail employee training. This seems particularly pertinent given the recent announcement of 100-120 planned store closures by Sears/Kmart.

Retail is a complex science. Although no one retailer can control the economy (many would argue that Walmart does in fact play a significant role in the global economy) we do understand that effective marketing will at least get people into your store; so let’s talk about what happens if marketing succeeds in that goal.

Great store design and merchandising will impact how much time people spend in your store and what they will purchase. This is the realm of a select team of employees but the people that have the most direct impact on your potential customers are your retail (sales) employees.

Your retail employees will define your corporate culture, reflect your corporate standards, impact customer satisfaction and loyalty and ultimately, increase the amount that each customer spends in the store. That’s all, of course, subject to who you hire and how well trained they are.

Let’s agree that you can provide high quality training without an LMS. The opportunity, however, is in scaling that training; providing it quickly and in short, focused interactions that are relevant and measurable. And dare we add ‘fun and rewarding’ for the learner?

In PART TWO I will discuss some observations and best practices for how an LMS can really impact your retail employee performance.
